How to Talk to Your Provider About Testing Your Hormones
Unfortunately, it's common for women to be shut-down by their providers when they ask about testing hormones. But knowing your hormone levels is a key part of your health journey and helps paint a complete picture of your body’s current state— you deserve to have this info!
If you’re unsure how to advocate for yourself, just use the tips and script below to have this important conversation with your care provider.
HERE’S WHAT TO DO IF YOUR PROVIDER DOESN’T WANT TO TEST YOUR HORMONES:
Tell them that you're curious, the testing is available and you want them to do it. You don't need additional reasons.
Remind them that you're paying for your visits (either out of pocket or via insurance) and the decision ultimately lies with you.
Use this phrase to confidently make your case: "I've been feeling [insert symptoms] and it's effecting my quality of life. I suspect a hormone imbalance and want to get a full work-up, including thyroid, cortisol and sex hormones. I'd also like a referral for someone who can help me interpret my results."
If your provider still gives push back, ask them for a referral to someone who will run your labs.
PRO-TIP: Don't be afraid to find a new care provider...supportive care is key to your health!
